Traffic Volume Study is defined as the survey of number of vehicles and pedestrians crossing section of road per unit during any selected period.

  • Establish relative importance of any road.
  • Structural design of roads.
  • Planning and design of new streets.
  • Design of intersections and other control devices
  • Planning, design and regulation of traffic.
  • Establish properties and schedules for traffic improvements.

Traffic volume study is carried out for vehicles and pedestrians separately or might be combined. It is carried out at number of selected positions along the road called as traffic count stations.

Actually when counting of vehicles starts, the enumerator has to be alert.

When a vehicle crosses the reference line, the enumerator has to mark “/” (slash), in the appropriate column. For the second vehicle of the same category another “/” by the side of previous mark, making the entry as two “//”.

Similarly 3rd, 4th, and 5th vehicles are marked as ///, ////, //// respectively. This markings are known as tally.

After marking the fifth vehicle, repeat the procedure as before for further vehicles.

Once the survey is completed for the shift, the sheets are arranged serially for each direction and tagged. The specific forms are available in which the information about the traffic is to be filled.
